Natural Therapies that can help you in the aftermath of Christmas

posted in Uncategorized No Comments

We’ve had a build-up to Christmas and all that entails, perhaps worrying about:-

  • Money - trying to make ends meet
  • What to buy
  • Family - who’s not talking to whom
  • Food - will there be enough
  • Bills - before & after
  • It’s all just a big hype

And now the party is over - all that effort & stress just for ONE DAY!

And now, for some there’s the worry about paying for it all as well as the normal bills that come in.  You may have school children who need new uniforms, books etc…

AND to top it off you may feel tired - you’ve got to go back to work (whether inside or outside the home), get back to normal life….

Stress is an amazing thing - it can be motivating and stimulating when needed but it’s when you stay in that constant state of stress for long periods of time that it can have a negative impact on our bodies.  Its’ damaging effects can harm our blood pressure, bone density, muscle and thyroid function.  It also affects us emotionally with depression, anger, inablilty to thin clearly.

There are many things we can do to help ourselves and it doesn’t a;ways have to cost lots.

One of the main things we need to do is make sure we’re on the top of the priority list.  I’m not talking about thinking we’re better than anyone else or that we won’t care about anyone except ourselves.  What I’m talking about is that a lot of people - particularly women/ mothers, the main carers of any family, tend to put oursleves last.  We’re so ingrained with making sure everyone else is OK first - children, husbands, wives, elderly parents, pets, we forget about our needs or are just too tired at the end of the day.

Here’s the catch - if we don’t look after ourselves and give us the high priority we deserve, we can get overloaded, stressed, emotionally drained, unhealthy.  And when that happens we can’t do what we want as well as we’d like, that is, looking after others and getting on with life.  BUT if we took some time out to nurture ourselves and do something we like - nurture the SOUL… we feel better physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, and subsequently cope better with all that we have/ need to do.

It could be something as simple as relaxing for 10 minutes, have a cup of tea/ coffee, glass of water, read some pages from that book we’re interested in.  And then get back into it..

I’m not talking about a one off thing either but something that is regular/ everyday, or weekly/ monthly, if it’s a bigger treat.  We must have something to look forward to that is just for us.

Some simple things we can do:-

  • BREATHE - we forget to breathe and don’t get enough of that wonderful sutff that our body thrives on.  Deep breathing can reduce stress and increase relaxation.
  • Have a bath or at least soak your feet when you won’t get interupted.  You could include things like Epsom Salts, dried flowers such as Rose Petals, Lavender Flowers or Chamomile Flowers, or a couple of drops of your favourite essential oil.
  • Go for a 10 minute walk and look at your neighbours’ gardens - smell the flowers/ appreciate the landscape
  • If you’ve got so many things to do but don’t know where to start, sit down and write a list of it all - put a box around it so you feel you have some control.
  • Start meditating.  If you can’t do that on your own, buy a CD or find a local meditation group.
  • Finally - you know how sometimes when we’re feeling particularly stressed we put our hand over our foreheads?  That in fact is a natural way of calming ourselves.  Kinesiology teaches us to place the palm or just finger and thumb on the bumps on the forehead, and if it’s a really bad time to place the palm of the other hand at the back of the head where the spine meets the skull (occiptals)

If you feel you want some help there are lots of natural therapies out there that can help to increase health and vitality, reduce pain, increase mobility, maintain health, or just to listen.  Ring around, ask friends if they know anyone, find someone and have a treatment e.g:

  • Aromatherapy - the use of pure essentlai oils extreacted from nature’s finest and healthiest plants.  It is a wonderful tool and works on all your body systems, smells nice, and combined with massage is very therapeutic.  For instance, Rose essential oils (Rosa damascena) is known to renew the sense of wellbeing to all areas of your life.  It has a sedative effect to calm and soothe the nerves and release feelings of anger, despair, and frustration.  Rose oil knockes down barriers we put up to protect ourselves and opens our heart to allow comfort and warmth into our lives.  (Please read the contraindications prior to use - particularly if pregnant)
  • Naturopathy - can help from the inside out to build up and support your body using herbal medicine
  • Acupuncture - helps your body deal with many things including stress and pain, and rebalancing your body
  • Counselling - if you feel you need some help gaining clarity, setting goals and changing the way you think about things
  • Remedial massage - a deep tissue massage can help with restructuring the body and improving posture

Whatever you decide to do, it’s a personal decision and it’s your choice.  The one thing we’re born with is free will.  It’s up to us to look after ourselves - heart, emotions, and subsequently our health.

Lastly, if you have access, look on the internet for hints and tips to help you help yourself.

I wish you health and happiness on your journey.
